 Michael Velten and Matthew Lovatt

Michael Velten is Deloitte’s Asia Pacific Financial Services Industry Tax Leader.

Michael has over 30 years tax experience; 25 years of which have been spent working in Asia having been based in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore. He advises on all areas of Singapore financial services tax (including indirect tax, information reporting, M&A tax and transfer pricing); and is a recognized industry tax expert. Michael works across all sectors including banking and securities, insurance and investment management.

Michael is qualified as both a Solicitor (Supreme Court of Victoria and High Court of Australia) and a CPA (Australia). Michael is an Accredited Tax Advisor: Income tax and GST (Singapore), a Certified Tax Adviser (Hong Kong) and a Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP). Michael is a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Hong Kong, an Associate of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia and a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors.

 

Matthew Lovatt is a Director in the Southeast Asia Financial Services Industry Tax Practice. Matthew provides Singapore and international tax advice to multinational enterprises in the financial services sector on a variety of direct tax and stamp duty issues, and to a large number of clients concerned with applications of blockchain technology.

Matthew is an England and Wales-qualified solicitor and a Singapore Accredited Tax Advisor (Income Tax). He joined the Deloitte team in July 2017, and previously worked at Baker McKenzie London, where his practice focused on both UK- and Europe-inbound and outbound advisory work and the full range of UK corporate tax and stamp duty issues, including, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, UK real estate investment, facility agreements, structured financing and derivatives. He frequently represents clients with the design and implementation of complex cross-border projects.

          Avik is a Tax Partner at Deloitte Singapore. With over 16 years as a global transfer pricing professional with Big Four accounting firms, Avik has a wealth of experience in transfer pricing planning structures for various types of business models, supply/value chain realignments, intellectual property valuation, structuring and pricing intercompany financial transactions, corporate guarantees, cash pooling, debt factoring and leasing arrangements, thin-capitalisation analysis as well as planning and executing global documentation projects for multinational corporations (MNCs).

          In his work with clients, Avik helps MNCs in industries spanning automotive, aerospace, financial services, shipping, IT, oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, real estate, consumer goods and telecommunication, to develop and implement commercially viable transfer pricing policies to achieve tax efficiencies across jurisdictions. He has represented his clients before revenue authorities in several Mutual Agreement Procedure (MAP) and Advanced Pricing Agreement (APA) cases including representing before the Tax Courts.

          Avik is also an active speaker at various transfer pricing discussion forums and authors articles in public domain. In the past, he had conducted training sessions on TP issues with revenue authorities in the region.

          Before relocating to Singapore, Avik worked in Australia, India, the United Kingdom and the United States.

          Avik is a Chartered Accountant by profession and holds a Master Degree in Commerce. He is also an Accredited Tax Professional with the Singapore Institute of Accredited Tax Practitioners.

          Theppine is a transfer pricing manager with Deloitte Singapore, and has more than 9 years of tax experience in the Big Four firms across the UK and Singapore. He has served local / multinational / listed financial services companies in Singapore and the UK.

          Theppine has extensive experience in assisting financial services clients with their transfer pricing requirements, including advising clients on transfer pricing planning and documentation of intercompany financial transactions and treasury functions, analysis and modelling of clients’ thin capitalisation positions and intercompany debt pricing. In addition, he has assisted clients in negotiating with tax authorities on APAs and transfer pricing audits.

          Theppine graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) from the University of Bristol and holds a Masters in International Commercial Law from the University of Leicester. He is also a Chartered Accountant and an ICAS Tax Professional with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

          Michellin is a Transfer Pricing Assistant Manager in Deloitte Singapore, with experience advising leading multinational clients in the Asia Pacific region from across the investment management, banking, insurance, securities brokerage, treasury and sovereign wealth fund sector.

          Her experience includes the preparation of strategic local / global transfer pricing documentation and planning studies, restructuring solutions, and monitoring of global / local transfer pricing risk exposures. In addition, she has successfully supported her clients on negotiation with tax authorities involving APAs, MAPs, as well as audit defence solutions and support with a focus on intra-group loan transactions.

          Michellin graduated with a Bachelors in Accountancy (Honours) from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and earned CFA Level I.

            Edward Senju

            Edward Senju is the Regional Chief Executive Officer at Sansan Inc., a Japanese provider of cloud-based contact management solutions for corporations. Using Singapore as a springboard, he is responsible for driving Sansan’s growth in the region, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Since joining Sansan in 2009, Senju has been a key contributor in the company’s growth and expansion from Japan to other parts of Asia.

            In 2011, he was tasked with helping launch and develop Sansan’s consumer-oriented contact management app, Eight. He subsequently helped build it into Japan’s largest business social network. With extensive time living in the United States and Mexico, Senju graduated from Chuo University (Tokyo) in 2003 and worked with global tech giant Oracle as an Account Manager, in charge of enterprise sales, before joining Sansan.

                      Prior to joining Deloitte, Yvaine was with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), the lead government agency in facilitating foreign investments to create sustainable economic growth and good job opportunities for Singapore. At EDB, a major part of her role was to customize and negotiate incentive packages for various investment activities, as well as facilitate companies in the end-to-end process of incentives application.

                      Yvaine has considerable experience advising senior C-suite executives on their investments in Singapore and is regularly involved in negotiating incentive packages, facilitating application processes and obtaining approvals on incentives for companies. She also advises companies with existing incentives in fulfilling investment commitments, as well as supports the re-negotiations and renewals of incentive packages.

                            Piyus Vallabh is a Tax Management Consulting Partner in Deloitte Southeast Asia and leads the Deloitte Global Tax Centre Asia (GTCA). Based in Singapore, he has over 20 years of experience in providing corporate tax and tax management consulting services. Piyus is a qualified Chartered Accountant with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and holds a BCA and LLB degree from Victoria University of Wellington.

                            The GTCA provides centralised management and coordination of tax and statutory account compliance obligations in the Asia Pacific region as well advising clients on tax risk, strategy, and technology.

                            Piyus has significant experience in leading tax technology projects in Asia Pacific including advising on tax technology needs for clients and implementation.                             Andreas Kirsch joined Deloitte’s Tax Governance Group in Singapore as a Director from Deloitte Germany in November 2020 and specialises in Tax Governance as well as Data Analytics. Andreas has over 17 years of experience in tax consultancy and in-house advisory including tax risk management, tax M&A work, tax planning, cross-border transactions from a direct and indirect tax perspective. His previous roles include industry as well as consultancy positions.

                            Andreas has a master degree in management and is a certified German tax advisors.
